The Huron 16 is pulled from the same mold as the Prospecteur 16 but we trim it down to 12.5”, as opposed to 14.5”. The lower profile reduces the weight and makes it easy to paddle in breezy conditions as either a solo or tandem.

CHOOSING YOUR PADDLE SIZE

While In-Store

When you come into the store we fit paddles in a few different ways.  For some paddles it’s as easy as standing up straight with the paddle blade on the floor in front of of you.  The grip should be somewhere between the top of your sternum and chin.  For other paddles we may have you hold the paddle as if you were about to take a stroke, and then put the shaft on top of your head.  If your elbows are at 90 degrees you have a good fit.

Ordering From Home

If you can’t join us in the store and see the paddles in person, the following is the best technique to get the correct size. The overall paddle length should be determined by the shaft length from the top of the grip to the throat of the paddle (where the shaft meets the blade).

To determine the paddle size you need, sit up straight on a chair and measure the distance from the surface of the chair to your chin.  Add 6” for the approximate distance the canoe seat would be from the waterline.  For example, a person whose chin to chair measurement is 23” would add 6” to arrive at a 29” shaft length.  Looking at the specifications for the Norseman (below) you would find the best fit would be a 57” paddle. A one or two inch variation really will not have much effect in usage, just try for closest shaft length. Remember to consider that canoe seat heights vary as might a ‘comfort range’ that you might feel more suited to.

Description:

Based on the Paddle Canada Basic Kayak Skills course, this is a shorter session.  This course offers some of the most basic concepts used in recreational flatwater kayaking but is not designed to be a comprehensive course.  You will learn how to launch a kayak, and will be introduced to kayak strokes. If time permits, you will be introduced to the basics of kayaking rescue techniques (how to get back in your kayak after a mishap).

If you require a kayak and equipment contact info@oldcreel.com after making your booking to let us know what type of kayak you would like to use.  Kayak rental is an option below and costs an additional $40 plus tax.

Participants who bring their own boat are required to have a PFD, Paddle, Whistle, 15 metre buoyant rope, 1 litre bailing device or pump.

In this course, participants will be introduced to the ultimate self-rescue method for sea or river kayaking: the roll!  Within the session, we will discuss the basic mechanics and technique of the kayak roll, and then move onward to the on-water development of the rescue procedure.

Installation:

• All Malone carriers come with two lengths of mounting bolts. Cross bars can vary in thickness and having multiple lengths to choose from allows best fit. We recommend the unused set of hardware be retained for future use with a different vehicle or cross bars. Longer length bolts are sold separately
  
• Carrier will fit T-slot aluminum car and truck roof racks with hardware sold separately.
  
• The carrier base has a rectangular "cutout" for square cross bar fit. The "cutout" will not effect the fit or function when installed to round or oval shaped cross bars.
  
• Our optional Telos Kayak Load Assist can be purchased separately to help with lifting the kayak onto and off the vehicle.
